Health Information Exchange

The Massachusetts Statewide Health Information (HIE) Exchange will move the Commonwealth from its current HIE capabilities in the state to a vision of a totally connected physician and patient community. Massachusetts is fortunate to have both the force of state law (Chapter 305) and funding from both state and federal sources to undertake this journey. Most importantly, however, are the rich public and private HIE assets already in place in the Commonwealth.

Building upon the time, effort and capital that has already been invested in several community and provider-based HIEs, the Massachusetts eHealth Institute (MeHI), as the state designated Health Information Exchange for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will leverage lessons learned from existing HIE initiatives to create the Commonwealth’s Statewide HIE.

The HIE will offer a mechanism by which patients, physicians, public health officials and researchers will be able to access data and actionable information, to allow them to demonstrate measurable improvements in health care quality, safety, efficiency and population health.
